Qualification for asbestos operatives
Stuart Goulden and Alex Mellor have become the first operatives to achieve an NVQ Level 2 Diploma through the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) option.
Last month, the two Northern Insulation Contractors Ltd asbestos removal operatives travelled to Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA) to carry out the EWPA - allowing them to gain the qualification.
As the full day assessment undertaken by the pair with the ARCA assessor was the inaugural EWPA to take place at ARCA, the assessment was also witnessed by an auditor from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
Director of Northern Insulation Contractors Ltd, Sarah Costello, said the NVQ option was the “perfect” route for the firm and its operatives.
“We have a number of experienced asbestos removal operatives and pay the CITB levy,” she said.
“We are currently in discussions with ARCA to have all of our asbestos removal operatives carry out an NVQ with them, as the guidance from ARCA has been great.
“Not only does the qualification allow us to showcase the expertise we have within our workforce, but it also comes with the added bonus of retaining experienced worker CSCS cards,” she added.
Satish Patel, ARCA training manager, said the NVQ route was formed to create an option for ARCA’s CITB levy-paying members to gain the qualification for its experienced operatives, and support an application for a CSCS card.
“We’re pleased to now have a complete NVQ solution for asbestos removal operatives on offer to our members,” he added.
