Geoenvironmental processes mitigating risks from natural and man-made pollutants are a necessary cost in reusing land safely. Geotechnical processes ensure the physical stability of ground based structures. By combining such processes, a larger net benefit can be achieved than designing and even implementing each in isolation. By adopting a zero waste and circular land use philosophy, site specific technology trains can be identified that will improve the environmental and economic effectiveness of a project.

Drones – The Law and the Benefits
Recent advancements in long-range high-definition terrestrial LiDAR systems (TLS) and unmanned aerial systems/vehicles (or ‘Drones’) has enabled detailed ‘point-cloud’ surveys to be obtained. However, the use of Drones requires an adherence to stringent aviation law that many operators and potential clients are unaware of. This paper looks at the Law pertaining to the use of Drones and the benefits these point-cloud surveys have in environmental and geotechnical mapping.

Different sites require specific and often very varied site investigation techniques. This seminar will explore the different approaches to site investigations, detailing what the aims and objectives are; from planning requirements to assisting with foundation design, how the investigation is undertaken; explaining the uses of different investigation techniques, sampling and testing and the resulting interpretative reports. Case studies will be explored of varied sized sites.

The art of a successful site investigation relies on more than specifications and guidelines. Adoption of a project specific, risk based, holistic approach from specification to completion will ensure the quality of the output as well as the safety of the delivery and ultimately reduce the overall cost of the project. Case study examples will demonstrate factors that if not considered can jeopardise the success of the result.
